What is SCRIP?
SCRIP is an ongoing fundraiser using gift certificates from national and local retailers. The certificates are purchased at a discount and sold at face value. The discounts range from 2% to 20%. St. Mary’s will retain the discount or profit. As an example, a store will sell $100.00 of certificates to the parish for $95.00. The parish sells the certificates at face value and retains the $5.00 profit.
The term “SCRIP” means “substitute money.” Every time you use SCRIP to buy necessary items like gas, groceries or clothes, St. Mary’s makes money. Since everyone uses these items, everyone can use SCRIP without spending more cash. SCRIP is a gift certificate identical to those normally issued by the participating stores. It is just like using cash, and it actually takes less time to use than writing a check.
How will St. Mary’s use the profits?
The SCRIP profits will assist the entire parish. For those who have children in St. Mary’s School, preschool or religious education, the SCRIP program will help keep costs down. For all other parishioners these profits will mean that less parish funds are needed to subsidize our educational programs.
By no means should parishioners view the SCRIP program as a replacement for Sunday offering. In fact, the SCRIP program was initiated in 1997 to help reduce the budget deficit and continues to aid us in meeting our budget needs. Unfortunately, the SCRIP program is only a part of the solution. Increased weekly offerings are still essential to maintain our school and our parish. Everyone participating in the SCRIP program will be given an opportunity to designate 1% of their total purchases as a tuition credit towards a particular student/family at St. Mary’s School or Religious Education program . Parents can apply this credit towards their child’s tuition, but others can take advantage of this credit too. Aunts, uncles, grandparents, neighbors and friends can designate the credit to go to a student of their choice. Parishioners who do not wish to designate the 1% to a particular student can choose to designate the 1% to the tuition assistance fund or the general operation of the school.
Do other parishes use the SCRIP program?
Many parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Dubuque, particularly parishes that operate Catholic Schools, use the SCRIP program. Many other local churches in Manchester have also begun SCRIP programs to aid with budgetary concerns.
What businesses participate in the SCRIP program?
The order form lists the local and national businesses that currently participate in the SCRIP program. Be sure to review the backside of the form for any known restrictions.
How can I use SCRIP certificates and what does it cost to participate?
The beauty of the SCRIP program is that it doesn’t cost you or the parish anything to participate! You will not pay anymore for your purchase and best of all 2% to 20% of our purchase is retained
by; St. Mary’s. Most businesses will give change (in SCRIP or cash) and you can continue to use manufacturer’s coupons with SCRIP.
You can use SCRIP certificates to purchase your basic needs such as food, gas, shoes and clothing. In addition, SCRIP can be used for purchasing hardware, lumber supplies, appliances and tires. You can even use the certificates for your dining pleasure or to give as gifts for others.
How can I participate in the SCRIP program?
SCRIP certificates are sold each weekend, after all weekend liturgies. The certificates are also available on Friday morning before, during and after the 8:30 A.M. liturgy during the school year. If your child attends St. Mary’s School, you may send your order to school with your student on Friday, and it will be filled and returned to your student to bring home to you. Just complete the order form by choosing the business or businesses from which you want to order certificates. A check or cash for the total amount of the order must accompany order forms. Checks are preferred and should be made payable to St. Mary’s SCRIP. We will make every attempt to have sufficient certificates on hand to meet the demand. If there is a shortage of certain certificates you can pick up the balance of your order on the following weekend.
In addition to buying SCRIP, you can participate in the program by volunteering. A successful SCRIP program requires many volunteers.
The SCRIP program will continue to be successful at St. Mary’s if the parish community continues to purchase SCRIP on a weekly basis. Plan ahead and remember to use SCRIP when making those everyday purchases.
